The Lamb of God Dies

Read Matthew 27:45-56 with Psalm 22

In the death of Christ on the cross, Matthew records three supernatural events - the three hours of darkness, the veil ripped from top to bottom, and the opening of the tombs and resurrection of saints; these are paralleled with statements from and about the Lord Jesus: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.”, Jesus when he cried with a loud voice he gave up his spirit, “Truly this was the Son of God.” Through these events and statements we see three wondrous works of Christ’s death - his quenching God’s wrath against us; his opening the way into the Holiest of places, God’s throne room; the death of death itself.
